What is an Intransitive Verb?
An intransitive verb does not take an object.
In Japanese grammar, this type of verb is called
自動詞.
With an intransitive verb, the action happens by itself.
鳥が飛ぶ — a bird flies
In this sentence, the bird flies by itself, so there is no object.
In Japanese sentences, the subject of an intransitive verb is often marked by the particle が.
For example:
電気がつく — the light turns on
These verbs describe actions or changes that happen naturally.
自動詞:verbs without an object (intransitive)
The opposite type of verb is called 他動詞 , which describes actions directed toward an object.
