Description

The radical 卜 means divination or fortune-telling. It comes from the image of cracks made in shells or bones, once used to read the future.

Note: 卜 is rare in modern kanji. In classical times it was linked to divination by reading cracks in shells and bones. It is sometimes called ぼくのと or simply うらない. Often used at the かしら (top) position of a character — in that case its shape changes slightly, as seen in 占.
