❓ FAQ (Q&A)
Is Kanji World free to use?
Yes. Kanji World is not only completely free — it is also 100% ad-free. No banners, no pop-ups, no distractions. Just simple, clean learning on any device.
Is Kanji World only about kanji?
Not at all. While the core of the site is kanji — with 1,040 characters currently covered — Kanji World also provides "fundamentals" to help you use kanji effectively. Beginners can start with Hiragana 101, Kanji 101, and Words 101 (basic concepts of kanji and words built from kanji), and then move on to grammar essentials such as Particles 101 and Conjugation 101. These guides ensure learners understand not just the characters, but also how they work together in real Japanese.
What levels are covered?
Kanji World currently includes 1,040 kanji, covering grades 1 – 6 of Japanese elementary school (about half of the Jōyō set). The site is expanding to cover all Jōyō kanji.
What is the “101 series” in Kanji World?
The "101 series" is a set of beginner-friendly guides — Kana 101, Kanji 101, Words 101, Particles 101, and Conjugation 101. Each section offers clear explanations and examples to build a solid foundation in Japanese basics before moving on to individual kanji and vocabulary study.
How do I search?
Tap the icon anywhere on the site, or go to the Search page directly. You can type:
  • an English word (e.g., “tree” → 木 and related kanji),
  • Note: results may include other kanji that contain or are closely connected to the meaning of the word.
  • a Japanese reading in kana,
  • or a kanji character directly (you can paste more than one).
You can also browse by Radical Explorer.
What are the voice guides?
Most kanji pages include the English Voice guide — a short meaning or usage explanation. On some pages, a Japanese Voice is also available to model clear pronunciation. Just tap the orange E-voice tab (or the headphone icon) to play.
How can radical pages help my learning?
Radical pages show how kanji share common parts. By learning radicals, you start to notice patterns that make remembering kanji easier. On any kanji page, just tap the blue Radical Exp button to explore related characters.
What is the best device to use Kanji World?
Kanji World is built with a mobile-first design, so a smartphone is usually the easiest way to use it. Tablets and desktop computers also work well, but they don’t offer a major advantage over a phone. As long as you have a modern browser and sound enabled, you can explore the site fully on any device.
