Exceptions to the Rule: 今日, 明日, 昨日

Did you feel something “off” about the readings of 今日きょう and 明日あした? Most two-kanji words are usually read with on-yomi, but these very common words use something else — not even any of the listed kun-yomi. They are special exceptions that every learner needs to simply memorize.

今 日 - 明 日 - 昨 日

These three words — 今日きょう, 明日あした, and 昨日きのう — are everyday vocabulary, but their readings don’t match either the normal on-yomi or kun-yomi lists.
