複合動詞 — Phrasal Verbs
English creates new meanings by combining a verb with a small word such as
up,
out,
off,
in, or
over.
These small words are called particles,
and they can change the meaning of a verb in many interesting ways.
For example,
take +
off,
take +
up, and
take +
over
all create different meanings.
Instead of trying to memorize long lists,
use the Phrasal Verb Explorer
and see how one verb combines with different particles.
| verb | particle | example | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| take | off | take off | remove / depart |
| take | up | take up | begin / occupy |
| take | over | take over | assume control |
| look | for | look for | try to find |
| put | off | put off | postpone |
| get | through | get through | finish / succeed |
The explorer lets you choose a verb, choose a particle, and see how the meaning changes. It is a good way to learn both patterns and examples.
