開ける (あける) is ichidan (る-verb). You drop る and add endings like ます, た, ない. Very regular. It’s transitive: you actively open something (a door, a box).

開く (あく) is godan (う-verb). The final く changes: 開きます (polite), 開いた (past), 開いて (te-form). It’s intransitive: something opens by itself, or becomes open.
