- 一般的 — general; typical
- 全般 — across the board; the whole field
- 諸般 — various; all sorts of
- 般若 — prajna; profound wisdom (also Noh “Hannya” mask)
- 般若心経 — Heart Sutra
- 万般 — every kind; all matters
般 combines the boat 舟 with a hand/weapon element (たたく意の殳) — picturing a boat being pushed along with an oar. From the idea of “moving around / going about,” it broadened to mean “kinds; in general,” as in 一般 and 全般.
Think of a small boat(舟)circling a lake, tapping the water with its oar to move. As it “goes about,” it meets all kinds of things — that’s the feel of 般. It also appears in 般若(はんにゃ), a phonetic borrowing of “prajñā,” meaning deep wisdom. The famous 般若心経 carries that wisdom across like a boat, while the Noh 般若面 shows how wisdom sees through raging emotions.
